If ever there was a time to try something new, like today’s hand-braided doormat how-to, it would be during a chilly winter weekend (cue weatherperson: “This weekend will be a chilly one!”). While the kids whittle away their Saturday morning in front of the TV or playing in their rooms, simply light a fire, put on some soothing tunes, and grab this fun project to challenge your spacial apperception and DIY capabilities. When you’re done, you’ll have a very impressive and functional piece to adorn your doorstep. I know you can do it! Why knot give it a go? (cue: rotten tomatoes!)

DIY Braided Doormat…Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 165 feet of 1/2-inch-thick twisted nylon rope.
  • one 35″x14″ piece of craft paper (or wrapping paper)
  • pencil
  • needle and thread (any color)
  • scissors
  • lighter
  • craft glue
